@KNERDCULTURE: Wizard World Comic Con Nashville

Nerd Riders Vlog Co-Riders
Kristin @KNERDCULTURE
& Clint Redwine

So most are not aware that I, Kristin @KNERDCULTURE, has never:
  1. been to any kind of Comic Con
  2. purchase & read a comic book
At today's Wizard World Comic Con in Nashville, it was my mission to accomplish both of these!

The first one was easy - show up - and I did with my Nerd Riders Vlog co-rider Clint Redwine! The fact that we both showed up representin villains completely made my morning.

Respectively, Clint supported the troops with his Stormtroopers tee & I showed off Voldemort's beauty shot.

Truth be told we were the happiest Dark Lords despite us *trying* to mean mug in photos.

OK! So my missions! #1's in the bag!  #2 - purchase & read a comic! We made our rounds on the floor and there were a lot of vendors who had the collectible, hundreds of dollars comics. For a first timer, that's a bit of a commitment.

Mike McKone is currently penciling & inking X-men.
We made our way to the Artist's Row at Wizard World to ask the advice of the creators! Who better to point me in the right direction than one of the on-site artists.

Clint and I came upon Mike McKone drawing a commission & asked his suggestion for me: a high fantasy book reader.

McKone suggested Vertigo's Fables. "Its a bit like the TV series "Once Upon A Time", he says. That got my inner Disney kid's attention, so I went in search of Fables on the convention floor.

As I expected, it is hard to jump in to series. Its like starting Harry Potter with The Goblet of Fire and expecting to know what Muggles are or what Polyjuice potion does. You need the back story.

A couple of kind vendors suggested that I look for Fables in the trade paperbacks so I can get the first 8-9 issues in one swoop. Good to know that Comics, like novels, have different versions. Novels have hardback & mass-market paperbacks, with paperbacks coming in large & pocket sizes. Comics too have single issues & trade paperbacks. I did not leave Wizard World with a Fables trade paperback but I'll be hitting up Nashville's The Great Escape very soon to grab me a copy.

Mission #2: Accomplished! Thanks Harley Quinn cosplayers!

Well by now, it's middle of the day and I am still comic book-less. Digging through box after box with me is my co-rider Clint. He came across DC Comics's Harley Quinn #1 & #2.

There were a ton of cosplay ladies rocking Harley Quinn & being outside of my nerd circle, I did not recognize the character.

Thank you Nashville Wizard World Harley Quinn cosplayers! You were my inspiration for my first comic book purchase!

Anyone see the Geek "Mystery" boxes?
I played that game of roulette and walked out with a box full of X-Men comics & a R. A. Salvatore DemonWars! Really awesome to have met Mike McKone earlier in the day & then open my mystery box to some of his work.

Karma. You did me a kindness today. And it's two fold.

I have come across some of Salvatore's fantasy novels but never picked him up. Its going to be nice to read him in the comic world before I read him in my fantasy book world.
I think I won the "Mystery Box" jackpot! Yeah X-Men!

I would chalk up today as a big win all around! First Comic Con in the books & I have a stack of comics to read!

And Clint & I will be posting our FIRST Nerd Riders Vlog very soon recapping more about what happened at Wizard World - so stay tuned here & on Twitter!

Be sure to follow us on Twitter! We'd love to hear from you!

Mix 929 #PopCulturePrincess - Sept 25th

ABC's NASHVILLE premiered last night and oh my! No spoilers here but we have a lot of drama to sort out this season and everyone is bringing their own little bag of Crazy with them!

And those live performances from Deacon & Will - so good! Fun Fact - those "live" performances were actually LIVE performances by Chip Esten & Chris Carmack, respectively!

Mix 929's Clint Redwine and I sat in on NASHVILLE's performance rehearsals this week where we captured this video of Chris Carmack & band at The Bluebird Cafe.

You would have thought we were down in Jamaica with this little number, but no its just an impromptu jam session in between rehearsal shot. It was an authentic moment that happens every day all over Nashville - the band starts playing & whatever flows flows.

It's what we do here & I love that laid back attitude is alive and well on the set of NASHVILLE!

Clint and I sat down with Chip Esten and he talked about the craziest fan mail he has ever received. Chip was a Klingon on Star Trek Next Generation & Star Trek Voyager & a fan sent him a playing card of him as his Klingon character. Esten signed the card and mailed it back.

Chip Esten as Deacon, The Bluebird Cafe
Who knew we had a Trekkie on NASHVILLE! Now we need someone (cough *Chip* cough) to give up the archive pictures or footage! We need to see him in his full regalia!

I've left a spot for his debut below.

If you missed last night's premier, get home today and release this first episode from your DVR! You'll be glad you did!

Mix 929 #PopCulturePrincess - ABC's Nashville Press Day

TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT!

ABC's NASHVILLE premiers at 9cst & Mix 929's Mix Morning Show Clint Redwine and I spent time this week with the stars as they prepare for not one but two LIVE performances tonight!

Performing live during the Season 3 premier are Deacon and Will,
respectively played by Chip Esten and Chris Carmack. Both Chip & Chris
were on hand press day rehearsing on set at NASHVILLE's Bluebird Cafe.

Best part of rehearsals - the impromptu jam
session that broke out in between practice takes.
Nashville, being Nashville. Its what we do.

Deacon (Chip Esten)
Will (Chris Carmack)
LIVE at The Bluebird Cafe

Will's Bookshelf of Wonders

#ShopLocal
And it wouldn't be an outing with Clint without a little shenanigans.....

While hanging at Will's house, we may have pilfered the bookshelf but the set designers did not disappoint!

The CD stack came from Nashville's premier independent record store - Grimey's!

And can we just talk about this rebel
who broke Willy Wonka's No Food On Set Rule!

As chill and laid back as the city of Nashville, the cast and crew were equally as easygoing. Listen LIVE tomorrow at 645am for interviews with Chip Esten & Chris Carmack from Mix 929's Clint Redwine & ME, #PopCulturePrincess!

@KNERDCULTURE: Well, Didnt Expect to Be Here: Reading Slump Edition

Well, I didn't expect to be here....Still.

The @KNERDCULTURE Blog is here! I'm so excited that I have started a place to share my nerdy pursuits and what continues to persist....My Reading Slump.

Fantasy books are a love of mine and the movies/tv they spawn & if you are like me, you jump in head first and dive deep in to the worlds that authors have created! It's exhilarating, but, then you look around and there are not a lot of readers in your friend circles who go that far...so there is no one to pull you out of the slump. bummer.

Published by Del Rey
I just finished Robin Hobb's Fool's Assassin. It's the first book of three but there were six other Fitz Farseer books that came before. I have read them all & upon conclusion of Fool's Assassin, I did my normal...

* morned that it ended
* rejoiced that there are more coming
* marked the calendar for a year from now *hoping for that to be the release date*
* stared at my overloaded bookcase unable to meet my next adventure

And still no decisions were made.

I was bummed and then today happened.
scrolling through Twitter I found two posts I am very thankful for:
  1. Book Riot's post:  "5 Tips For Getting Out of a Long-Term Reading Slump"
  2. Open Culture's post: "Read 14 Great Banned & Censored Novels Free Online: For Banned Books Week 2014"
After looking back on the past couple weeks, maybe I need what Book Riot suggests - #4 Plan A Reading Day. I can do that. Still, it leaves me with nothing to read. And then...I scroll upon Open Culture's post.

I don't really care that its "Banned Books Week" but I do love all of the outlets talking about these books because they are out of my scope. They are out of my high-fantasy, lets learn a new vocab, build a world, etc....scope. Um, Eureka Moment happening? Yes!

Maybe a Reading Day in my favorite chair, with a no-dollar commitment, genre changing suggestion from Open Culture's list of free online reads might just do the trick. Can Sunday come quick enough? We'll see.

Mix 929 #PopCulturePrincess - Sept 23rd

FLORIDA WOMAN'S SHOCKING $20K SURGERY...for a what?!

The picture says it all - Jasmine "Tridevil" has a third boob....to make herself "unattractive to men."

Um, I think she nailed it.

UPDATE 9.24.14 - so Tri Devil Liar has been exposed as a liar. Shocker. I hope she enjoyed drinking from the fire hose of media inquiries because Im sure that flood of interview requests have run dry.

NOW TESTING @STARBUCKS

Thank you Redditor, so_oakland & BuzzFeed for giving your month old post traction! Currently Starbucks is testing a new drink - Dark Barrel.

Dark Barrel Latte Description Sheet - via Redditor so_oakland

Detailed in the picture above, Starbucks inspiration was the uptick of craft beer making. Dark Barrel said to have a "stout or dark beer" flavor...like Guinness?

Maybe this #PopCulturePrincess' next Starbucks run in Nashville might just be for a Dark Barrel. But will they have it yet? And will my PSL addiction ever forgive me?
Maybe one of each will do! Happy Drinking Coffee Fans!

Mix 929 #PopCulturePrincess - "The Good Lie" Movie Release Special Coverage

Mix 929's Mix Morning Show host Clint Redwine and I hit the Nashville red carpet for Reese Witherspoon's newest flick - The Good Lie.

Friday's premier at Nashville's historic Belcourt Theatre was a first for Witherspoon and she was joined in the celebration by "Nashville" star Charles Esten, fellow Tennesseans Sean & Leigh Anne Tuohy, and Governor Bill Haslam who gave introductions before the movie started.

Also walking the red carpet were the stars of the movie - Corey Stoll, Sarah Baker, and real-life Sudanese refugees Arnold Oceng, Nyakuoth Wiel, Femi Oguns; Ger Duany and rapper Emmanuel Jal.

Superb casting call to make when the production chose actors who are real-life Sudanese refugees, some former child soldiers, and lost boys. It added to the authenticity of the production and allowed me to feel immersed in their emotions.

Even the younger lost boys in the movie were played by the real life children of Sudanese refugees Peterdeng Mongok, Okwar Jale, Thon Kueth, Beng Ajuet and Kejo Jale.

The Good Lie is based on the true story of the "Lost Boys of Sudan"
and is set to release October 3rd.
